Breadfruit Saung is a typical Mangalore dish in which bread fruit pieces are marinated in a spicy chili and tamarind mixture , cooked and then sauteed with onions.
Ingredients:
Breadfruit, medium sized – 1
Onions – 3
Dry Red Chillies – 6
Tamarind Extract – 2 tbsps
Oil – 3 tbsps
Salt to taste
Method:
- Peel breadfruit and cut them into small pieces. Wash these pieces thoroughly.
- Cut onions into small slices.
- Boil 1/2 cup water and soak the dry red chillies for about 30 minutes.
- Cook breadfruit pieces with water.
- Blend soaked dry red chillies and tamarind extract into a smooth paste.
- Heat oil in a pan.
- Add onion and saute until onion slices turn translucent in color.
- Now add cooked breadfruit pieces and salt. Mix well.
- Add red chilli and tamarind paste. Mix well.
- Cook for 5 minutes on low flame.
- Turn off the heat.
- Serve hot with rice.
